Retaining wall installation and repair
A wall that is bellying forward, leaning out at the top or dropping grit at its toe is not a stone problem. It is a water problem, because a retaining wall is a drainage structure that happens to hold soil back. Nelson Bautista walks the wall himself and tells you whether it can be repaired or has to come down.
The part of the wall you never see is the part holding it up
Dry soil is heavy. Saturated soil is heavier, and it does something dry soil does not: it pushes. Water trapped behind a wall creates hydrostatic pressure, a sideways load that builds with every rain. Walls are rarely pushed over by dirt. They are pushed over by the water in the dirt.
Freeze-thaw finishes the job. Saturated backfill freezes, expands and shoves the wall forward, then thaws without it coming all the way back. A winter of that and the wall walks out of the hill, which is why one that stood six years suddenly looks wrong.
So a retaining wall is really a drainage system with a stone face on it. The block is what you look at. The gravel, the fabric and the pipe behind it do the work.
Why do retaining walls fail?
Failed walls repeat themselves. When we are called out to look at one, it is almost always something on this list, and usually more than one thing.
What we find behind walls that have moved:
- No drainage zone. Soil backfilled straight against the block, so every rain loads the wall.
- A pipe with nowhere to go. Perforated pipe buried without an outlet fills and stays full.
- No filter fabric. Fines blind the gravel, and the drainage zone quits while the wall still looks new.
- An inadequate base. Stone dumped in one lift, or a course set on topsoil, settles and takes the wall with it.
- Block undersized for the height. Unit weight and depth resist overturning, and a garden-wall unit has neither.
- No batter. A wall built dead plumb stands in front of the slope instead of leaning into it.
- No geogrid where the height called for it. Grid ties the wall and the retained soil into one mass.
How we build a wall so it does not do that
Excavation goes back further than homeowners expect, because the whole zone behind the wall has to be open for gravel, and down past topsoil to ground that will not compress. Crushed stone is compacted in lifts in the base trench, and the first course is set level and buried below finished grade.
Then the part that decides the wall's life. Behind the block goes clean angular drainage stone, not the soil that came out of the hole, and filter fabric keeps fines out of it. A perforated pipe runs at the bottom of that zone, pitched to daylight where grade allows or tied into a line that discharges somewhere real. A pipe that ends in the middle of a lawn is not drainage.
Wall and backfill rise together, compacted in lifts, with geogrid at the courses the height calls for. The wall is capped and the ground above it graded so surface water leaves instead of pouring down the back of the block. Ask any contractor to show you where water exits a finished wall. If nobody can point at a weep or an outlet, it is not leaving.
Wall types, and when each one is right
Height, what sits behind the wall, the soil and the house decide the type. Baudi builds all of it with one crew, so this is a recommendation rather than a pitch. Patios, steps, veneer and pillars live on our masonry page.
- Segmental block. Manufactured units with a built-in setback, geogrid where the height requires it. The most predictable way to carry real load.
- Dry-stack natural stone. Fieldstone set by hand with gravel behind it, right in Bedford, Pound Ridge and Katonah where block reads wrong against the house.
- Mortared stone. Rigid, so it needs a footing below frost depth and weep holes, because a solid face gives water no other way out.
- Boulder and armor stone. Set with a machine, fast on a big grade change, and it wants the same gravel and pipe behind it.
- Poured concrete with a stone veneer face. Where the load calls for a structural wall and the finish still has to match the house.
- Timber and railroad tie. We do not build these and we replace many. They rot from the buried side and go all at once.

There is no honest number over the phone, because a wall is priced by face area and by what has to happen behind it. The drivers are height and length, the material, how much excavation the site needs, whether there is ledge, how much drainage stone and pipe the wall takes and where that pipe can discharge, whether geogrid is required, and how equipment reaches the work. Nelson comes out, measures, and writes it down. The estimate is free and usually back within a day of your call.
Often, yes, and it depends on the town and the height. Most Westchester municipalities require a building permit once a retaining wall reaches four feet measured from the bottom of the footing, and several require engineering stamps above that height. Walls near property lines, steep slopes, wetlands or watercourses can trigger separate reviews even when they are lower: Bedford routes work near wet areas through its Wetlands Control Commission, New Castle has steep-slope rules, and village lots in Mount Kisco can need approvals for anything near a stream. We flag what applies during the walkthrough and handle the paperwork as part of the job, so the permit question is settled before the crew arrives, not discovered by a stop-work order halfway through.
No, and anyone who offers to push it back is selling you the same failure twice. A wall bellies forward because saturated soil behind it has been loading it with hydrostatic pressure, usually for years, and freeze-thaw has walked the structure off its base. The block you can see has moved because the drainage system you cannot see either failed or never existed. Pushing the face back does nothing about the water, so the same pressure returns the next wet season. The honest repair is to take the moved section down, excavate the failed backfill, rebuild the base, and put the wall back up with clean drainage stone, filter fabric and a pipe that daylights somewhere real. Nelson looks at the wall and tells you whether a partial rebuild or a full one makes sense.
