Landscaping and masonry in Bedford, NY

Four-acre lots, different zones
Most of rural Bedford is zoned in four-acre pieces on purpose, and a typical property combines ground near the house, open field, woodland edge and a long private drive. Each zone needs a different plan and a different schedule. Mowing the field like the lawn wastes money; mowing the lawn like the field ruins it.
We walk the property and map the work by zone rather than quoting one blanket number for the whole address. Near the house it is beds, lawn and stonework. Past that it is edges, drainage and keeping the woods from moving in.
Old fieldstone walls
Dry-laid fieldstone runs along many Bedford frontages and property lines, and the town's character rides on them. Brush, vines and frost working behind the face are the usual reasons sections move.
We clear vegetation off the run first, then reset moved sections dry, with the stone already on site. Worth knowing: under the town's wetland rules, repairing an existing wall or walkway is generally allowed by right even where new construction would need a permit, which makes a reset the easy path as well as the right one.
Wetlands, buffers and drainage
Bedford regulates work in wetlands and in the buffer around them, and on wet, wooded parcels that buffer catches more projects than people expect: drainage runs, regrading, even some planting and clearing. The town's Wetlands Control Commission reviews what falls inside it.
We plan drainage so water is handled as far from regulated ground as the site allows, and we tell you at the walkthrough if what you want will need town review. A French drain in the wrong place is an expensive way to learn where the buffer line is.
Private drives and dirt roads
Bedford keeps more than thirty miles of dirt road, and plenty of private drives to match. Long drives have their own crown, low points and crossings where water passes. When the shape flattens, runoff cuts channels and silts the crossings.
Re-establishing pitch and clearing the crossing often matters as much as adding new stone. We also rebuild the aprons and Belgian block edges where drives meet the road.
Every job here starts the same way: a twenty-minute walkthrough and a written price.
Planting against Bedford's deer
Deer pressure in Bedford is as heavy as anywhere in the county. Between the preserves and the horse country there is a lot of range and not much natural food, so unprotected beds get eaten.
We plant what holds up here and are direct about what will not survive without protection. It keeps the second-spring replanting bill off your books.
What affects the price in Bedford?
Acreage changes the math. Access is usually good, but scope, slope and water rule the number.
Common factors:
- Field, edge and lawn zones priced separately
- Wall resets measured by the running foot
- Wetland-buffer review before drainage work
- Long-drive grading and crossings
- Deer-resistant plant selection
- Seasonal contracts across large parcels

Common questions
If yours is not here, call (914) 486-3682. Someone answers seven days a week.
Possibly. The town regulates work in wetlands and the buffer around them, and the buffer reaches further than most owners expect. Nelson flags it at the walkthrough, and repairs to existing walls and walks are generally allowed by right.
Yes. Most sections reset dry with the stone already there, cleared of brush and rebuilt on a base that handles frost. Matching new stone into an old run is the part that takes judgment, and it is work we do constantly in Bedford.
Yes. Most Bedford accounts are seasonal: weekly grounds near the house, field and edge work on a longer cycle, cleanup in fall and snow after that. One crew, one contact, the whole year.
Fewer than the catalogs suggest. We plant from what actually holds up in northern Westchester and tell you plainly when something you want will need protection to make it through a winter.
All three, every week. The hamlets are different jobs: village-scale yards near the Metro-North side, larger parcels out the dirt roads. Katonah has its own page with more detail.
Bedford pricing turns on scale and rules more than on the work itself. Four-acre zoning means long drives, big lawn areas and real distances between the truck and the job, which changes how much time every task takes. Old fieldstone walls are rebuilt by hand, stone by stone, and are priced by length and condition rather than a flat rate. Anything near a wet area can involve the town's Wetlands Control Commission, and permit-stage work is part of the scope where it applies. Dirt-road frontage and gravel drives add their own maintenance variables. None of that can be guessed from the road, which is why Nelson walks the property, measures what matters, and leaves a written scope and price. The visit is free, and the price is in writing before any work starts.
