Gutter and Downspout Cleaning in Westchester County

A gutter packed with maple seeds and shingle grit stops moving water. It goes over the front lip in a sheet and lands in one narrow strip of soil against the house. On a heavy October rain that is hundreds of gallons dumped into the same eight feet of ground.

That soil gives up. It compacts, it washes out, and the grade that used to fall away from the house starts falling toward it. The water follows. It gets under the patio, it undermines the walkway, and eventually it shows up in the basement.

Our masonry crew is the one called two years later to reset the sunken walk, and on a lot of those jobs the first thing we find overhead is a gutter nobody has cleared in years. We are already on many of these properties in the fall doing clean-up, so the gutters are not a second trip.

Gutter work done properly is hands in the trough, not a leaf blower waved at the roof from the ground. Blowing debris out of a gutter moves the top layer and pushes the packed sludge at the bottom straight into the downspout, which is where the real blockage forms. We work the runs by hand, bag the debris and take it with us, then run water through to confirm the system drains.

This is the part most gutter cleaning skips, and it decides whether the work was worth doing. A perfectly clear gutter that dumps at a splash block six inches off the wall has only delivered the roof water to the foundation faster.

Guards help. They are not a permanent solution, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling guards. A screen or micro-mesh guard keeps whole leaves and twigs out of the trough, which is worth something under heavy tree cover. What it does not stop is the fine material: pine needles, maple seed helicopters, shingle grit and roof moss.

That fine debris still gets through, or it mats on the mesh and sheds water over the edge while the gutter underneath stays clean. Guards move the maintenance, they do not remove it.
